Håkon Austbø wint Edison klassiek voor Catalogue d'oiseaux!
Op 10 februari jl. werden de winnaars van de Edison klassiek 1998 in het
Concertgebouw Amsterdam bekendgemaakt. Håkon Austbø was met
zijn recente opnames van Catalogue d'oiseaux en Petites Esquisses d'oiseaux
van Messiaen de winnaar in de categorie Instrumentale solorecitals. Hier
volgt het juryrapport:
Hoewel de muziekliefliebber de laatste jaren geen reden tot klagen heeft
waar het uitgaven met de muziek van Olivier Messiaen betreft, zijn overtuigende
moderne opnamen van de zeven boeken omvattende monumentale pianocyclus 'Catalogue
d'oiseaux' met een lantaarntje te zoeken. De interpreet dient niet alleen
over een enorme dosis technische bagage te beschikken, maar tevens in staat
te zijn de complexe ritmische en harmonische structuren van deze stukken
helder te realiseren. Dit liefst zonder te vluchten in een hol virtuoos
vlagvertoon en voorts door zich verre te houden van een benadering die 'illustrerend'
is. Håkon Austbø, die al bij menige gelegenheid heeft getoond
een eclatante affiniteit met Messiaen te bezitten, heeft dat als weinig
anderen begepen. Hij smeedt Messiaens ornithologische ontboezemingen op
een wijze in klinkende munt om, die maakt dat men het geheel van A tot Z
als een blok imponerende, abstracte, klinkende architectuur ervaart. Een
taal waarin spiritualiteit, muzikaliteit, een optimale transparantie en
een kolossale zin voor kleur en sonoriteit naadloos samengaan. De opname-kwaliteit
van deze productie, een mijlpaal in de Messiaendiscografie, is al even uitmuntend
en doet alle recht wedervaren aan de zowel markante als tot in alle dynamische
extremen doorzichtig gehouden musiceertrant van Austbø.
On Feb 10th, 1998, the winners of the Edison Awards 1998 were announced
in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Håkon Austbø's recent recording
of Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux and Petites Esquisses d'oiseaux on NAXOS
was the winner in the category Instrumental solo recitals. Here is the jury
report:
Even though music lovers in recent years have no reason for complaining
as far as releases of Messiaen's music go, it's extremely difficult to find
convincing modern recordings of the monumental, seven books comprising piano
cycle "Catalogue d'oiseaux". The performer should be in possession
not only of an enormous amount of technical skill, but also of the ability
to realise with clarity the complex rhythmic and harmonic structures of
these pieces; all this by preference without taking refuge in hollow virtuoso
display or indulging in an "illustrative" approach. Håkon
Austbø, who at many occasions already gave proof of extraordinary
affinity with Messiaen, realises this as few others. He forges Messiaen's
ornithological confessions into sounding objects in a way that makes one
experience the whole from A to Z as one block of impressive, abstract, musical
architecture, in a language uniting spirituality, musicality, optimal transparency
and a colossal sense of colour and sonority in a seamless way. The recording
quality of this production, a milestone in the Messiaen discography, is
equally outstanding and gives full credit to Austbø's distinguished
musicianship, transparent as it remains into dynamic extremes.
